Roles of Transports in the Military

Transportation plays a very important role to society. The military, for instance, makes heavy use of transportation as much as the common people do. Transports have been in use for soldiers since time immemorial.

During the Middle Ages, warlords' soldiers and knights relied on horse carriages and riverboats in order to move from one territory to the other. While infantry was confined to going on foot during battles and marches, supplies and artillery were carried through these carriages because it can be cumbersome and heavy to carry them by hand.

As technology progressed, the automobile was invented. The military is quick to adapt to this new creation, and the automobile soon found widespread use in the world's armies. Up to this day, the military makes use of cars or jeeps as transportation for officers while trucks served the same purpose for the enlisted men of the armed forces. There is also what they called the armoured personnel carriers which ferry men across battlefields. APCs are capable of defending themselves since they are equipped with machine guns and heavy armor.

Transportation for people is not the only purpose that cars and automobiles serve for the military. In some instances, cars and trucks were used as mobile launchers of surface-to-air missiles in antiaircraft defence units.

Cars and transport play a big part in the military's day to day operations. Without transportation, it would mean inefficient logistics and limited movement for the armed forces. This would greatly affect its ability to mobilize and serve its role for the defence of a nation.
