Walking through the WWI battlegrounds of northern Italy

Italy was our ally in the Great War and the conflict there saw Italian troops pitted against German speaking troops from the Austro-Hungarian Army and later some German units too; Rommel – later the Desert Fox – as a young officer fought here, for example. In late 1917 the Italian Army was almost defeated at the Battle of Caporetto and British regiments were sent to Italy in the final years of the war.

During the Centenary of the Great War we are aiming to take those with an interest in the subject to some of the lesser known WW1 battlefields and so join us on this unique walking tour of the WW1 sites on the Asiago and Isonzo battlefields; with preserved trenches, bunkers and some stunning views. The nature of the ground here is that we combine battlefield walks with coach visits; all the trails are marked routes, there is no climbing involved but there are some steep paths to navigate and it is a tour that will require a good level of fitness and mobility.

9-Day Break

  • Day 1 - Local departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then onwards to our hotel in Belgium.
  • Day 2 - We continue south towards northern Italy and our hotel in Bassano del Grappa, for three nights. B,D
  • Day 3 - We start our walks on the Asiago battlefield at the Austro-Hungarian front line outside the town of Asiago. Walking through the old No Man’s Land we reach the British outposts and then into the British front line area which can be clearly seen in the woods below San Sisto Ridge. The walk continues up on to the ridge and through the British second line to the area where Edward Brittain – brother of Vera Brittain – was killed. We follow the British line and go past several dugouts before reaching the British cemetery at Barental Road. The walk continues to the British rear positions, eventually reaching Granezza British Cemetery (Edward Brittain’s grave) and visiting the nearby memorial to Colonel Knox and the officers, NCOs and men of the 143rd (Warwickshire) Brigade. In the afternoon we see the impressive Italian War Memorial in Asiago and the Great War Museum at Canove. B,D
  • Day 4 - The second battlefield walk starts at the British front line positions at the Ghelpac fork and follows Princes Road which was used by British troops approaching the front line trenches. The route passes Boscon British cemetery and the field ambulance location known as Swiss Cottage before reaching a famous crossroads known as Handley Cross before ending in Magnaboschi, the site of both British and Italian war cemeteries. After lunch we explore British and Italian trench positions at Mount Zovetto, and visit other British cemeteries in the area including: Dueville British Cemetery and Montecchio Precalcino British Cemetery. B,D
  • Day 5 - We depart the Asiago area and visit Giavera British Cemetery and trench positions on the Montello Ridge before travelling to the Gradisca d'Isonzo area, where we stay for two nights. We also spend time to visit the massive Redipuglia Italian Memorial. B
  • Day 6 - In the morning we head into neighbouring Slovenia and see the interesting Kobarid Museum with its WW1 material and then walk the Italian trench positions at Kolovrat which is an extensive area of Great War battlefield remains which includes command posts and observation posts, machine-gun and gun positions, caves and networks of trenches. In the afternoon we look at the German contribution and see their dead in the ossuary at Tolmin before walking the Austro-Hungarian front line positions at Mengore. We end the day at the Italian War Memorial at Kobarid. B
  • Day 7 - In the morning we see Austrian graves and memorials and then walk the Ravelnik Battlefield and war museum with trench systems and other WW1 visible remains. We leave around lunchtime and head to our overnight hotel in central Germany. B,D
  • Day 8 - We head north to reach our overnight hotel in Belgium. B
  • Day 9 - To Calais and return home. B
