5-Day Break

Day 1 – Local departure then onwards to Arras for a four night stay.
Day 2 – Telegraph Hill, Pals Battlefield (included) Walk 1:Our first walk starts on the outskirts of Arras, where the front lines were in April 1917. Seeing the old No Man’s Land and German defences on Telegraph Hill. We then see the ground captured by London units near Neuville-Vitasse and visit the cemeteries in nearby Henin, where the Liverpool and Manchester Pals were at the start of the battle. Poets at Arras, Fontaine les Croisilles (included) Walk 2: We visit the site where Siegfried Sassoon was wounded in 1917, and a cemetery where two VC winners are buried. We walk down into Fontaine les Croisilles to see the memorial to the West Riding troops. B
Day 3 – Monchy, The Lost Fusiliers, Newfoundland’s Last Stand (included) Walk 3: Monchy le Preux was the key to the Arras battlefield, and we begin at Happy Valley before studying the story of the Royal Fusiliers attack. We then look at the use of Cavalry, and go into the village to see the 37th Division and Newfoundland Regiment memorials. Moving on to Infantry Hill we see where disaster struck the ‘Newfies’ and where the battle came to an end. Wancourt Hill – Northumberland Sacrifice (included) Walk 4: In the afternoon we see where the men from 50th Division fought in 1917, around Wancourt Hill and Heninel. We start on the edge of Heninel and visit the graves at Wancourt before moving to the high ground at Wancourt Tower. B
Day 4 – Bullecourt, Australians at Arras (included) Walk 5: Our final walk takes us from Ecoust, along the old railway line – up towards the village of Bullecourt. We see the area where the Yorkshire Territorials supported the Australians, then walk across the fields where the Australians lost more than 10,000 men. We look at the story of Jack White, found many years after the war, before ending at the impressive ‘Digger’ statue. In the afternoon either have free-time in Arras or join us on a visit to the Wellington Quarries (optional). This amazing underground world, created by New Zealander Tunnellers in 1916, was opened in 2008. B
Day 5 – To Calais, and return home. B
