Last Days of World War I

Cologne

4-Day Break

  • Nov 9 – We arrive at our hotel in Tournai for a 3-night stay.
  • Nov 10 – In Flanders Fields (included). A day spent visiting key WWI battle sites, beginning at Sanctuary Wood, where British trenches are preserved from 1915. We also visit the nearby Canadian Memorial on Hill 62, then move onto Hooge and its museum, the military cemetery and mine craters from WW1. Lunchtime is spent in central Ypres. In the afternoon, we see Yorkshire Trench, the scene of archeological work by the Belgian 'Diggers' and visit the grave of a 14-year-old soldier, believed to be the youngest who died. We end the day at Tyne Cot, the largest British cemetery of them all, with more than 11,000 graves. In the evening, we attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. B
  • Nov 11 – Armistice Day (included). We travel to Ypres in time for the Veterans' Parade in the main square, and the special ceremony at the Menin Gate at 11am. After, you can attend a special concert arranged by the Last Post Committee with military bands from throughout Europe (optional). All funds raised from the event help ensure the playing of the Last Post every evening. We stay in Ypres for an evening meal (at extra cost) prior to the special Last Post at the Menin Gate at 8pm. B
