Cycling the Ypres Salient


5-Day Break

  • Day 1 – Local departure then onwards to Ypres for a four night stay.
  • Day 2 – Behind the Lines (included) Cycle Ride 1. We will be riding to Poperinge, behind the British Front Line, looking at cemeteries used by the medical facilities, especially the cemetery at Lijssenthoek. We will also look at campsites used by the British and Commonwealth troops in the area between Poperinge and Ypres, before cycling back to Ypres via Vlamertinge where we visit the grave of Captain Francis Grenfell, V.C. B
  • Day 3 – The Front Line (included) Cycle Ride 2. We will follow the curve of the Ypres Salient. The ride takes in some of the major British cemeteries of the Passchendaele offensive and visits the German cemetery at Langemarck. There will be an opportunity to visit Varlet Farm and see how a modern farm deals with the aftermath of the Great War. We will also visit Tyne Cot Cemetery, before seeing Polygon Wood and Hill 60. B
  • Day 4 – Messines Ridge (included) Cycle Ride 3. Cycling south of Ypres, we will make our way along the Messines Ridge, the scene of the largest detonation of mine explosions under the German lines in June 1917. We will visit the grave of Major Willie Redmond, leader of the Royal Irish Regiment before seeing some of the mine craters on the Ridge itself. B
  • Day 5 – To Calais, and return home. B

Equipment
Bicycles are provided and will be town and country type cycles, each with seven gears, straight handlebars and comfortable saddles, ideally designed for leisurely cycling. Please note that hard hats are not provided, so you should bring your own. Other items which you may require are cycle clips, rucksack or panniers, suitable waterproofs and riding clothing, sun-tan cream and water bottle.


Accommodation
You’ll stay for four nights at the 3 star Novotel in the centre of Ypres, near the Menin Gate and the market place, with its many cafes, shops and bars. The hotel has a lift, bar, and restaurant. All bedrooms have TV, hairdryer and air-conditioning.
